one dimensional internal ballistics simulation of solid rocket motor
Authors
abstract
an internal ballistics model has been developed for performance prediction of a solid propellant rocket motor. inthis model a 1-d unsteady euler equation with source terms is considered. the flow is assumed as a non-reacting mixture of perfect gases with space and time varying thermo physical properties. the governing equations in the combustion chamber are solved numerically by using the steger and warming flux vector splitting scheme. after validation of results by experimental data, the effect of grain geometrical variables and solid propellant characteristics are studied on performance characteristics of a standard internal burning cylindrical grain. these parameters include of negative /positive erosive burning, propellant characteristics, port to throat area ratio and initial temperature of the propellant. the results of developed model show that, propellant characteristics are dominant factors which affect performance characteristics. when erosive burning rate are considered, the 1-d internal ballistic analysis have good agreement with experimental data.

This paper deals with the analysis of burn rate using various catalysts of Iron Oxide and determining which gives the higher burn rate with low pressure variation. The Ammonium Perchlorate (AP) was obtained and ground into fine powder with the particle size ranging from 63 to 125 μm. The propellant strands were prepared with proportions by mixing AP with the binder (Hydroxyl Terminated Polybuta...
full textEarly Detection of Solid Rocket Motor Case - Breach Failure ∗
This paper describes work on early detection of space launch vehicle failures that could lead to loss of control during ascent. The particular focus is on the Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) comprising First Stage of the Crew Launch Vehicle (CLV). Some of the most important failure modes leading to loss of vehicle control are caused by hot gases ejected from the SRM combustion chamber through a case b...
full textScale Effects on Quasi-Steady Solid Rocket Internal Ballistic Behaviour
The ability to predict with some accuracy a given solid rocket motor’s performance before undertaking one or several costly experimental test firings is important. On the numerical prediction side, as various component models evolve, their incorporation into an overall internal ballistics simulation program allows for new motor firing simulations to take place, which in turn allows for updated ...
full textInternal ballistics of a pneumatic potato cannon
Basic laws of thermodynamics and mechanics are used to analyse an air gun. Such devices are often employed in outdoor physics demonstrations to launch potatoes using compressed gas that is here assumed to expand reversibly and adiabatically. Reasonable agreement is found with reported muzzle speeds for such homebuilt cannons. The treatment is accessible to undergraduate students who have taken ...
